Colour 3D Scanning Malaysia

A Shining 3D EinScan Libre scanner being used to capture a painted mural, with the colour image visible on the scanner screen

Quick verdict: Buy for colour only when appearance is part of the job. Heritage archiving, art, product visuals and dental work want the texture; reverse engineering and inspection do not. If you need a colour model once, send us the object — colour scanning is a service too.

An ordinary 3D scan captures shape, and the model comes back as a grey shell. Colour 3D scanning captures the surface colour and texture at the same time, so the digital model looks like the real object — every mark, shade and finish in place. (You will also see it written as “color” scanning; it is the same capability.) Trinventor Solution supplies the colour-capable Shining 3D systems and also runs colour scanning as a service for Malaysian museums, artists, product teams, dental labs and educators.

How colour 3D scanning works

The scanner screen showing the camera view of a painted wall with the optimal capture distance displayed
On-device capture: colour, texture and the working distance, checked on the scanner before the surface is recorded.

A colour scanner pairs the scanning sensor with dedicated colour cameras. While the geometry is captured surface point by surface point, the cameras photograph the object, and those images are mapped onto the mesh as a texture. The result is a photorealistic 3D model: rotate it, and the colouring stays locked to the surface, correct from every angle.

One thing is worth saying plainly: colour capture does not change dimensional accuracy. A colour scan is still a 3D scan underneath — it simply carries texture as well as shape.

When colour matters — and when it does not

A scanned surface with colour and texture mapped back onto the mesh — the difference between a grey shell and a model that looks like the object.

Colour earns its keep when the appearance of the object is part of what you are recording or presenting:

  • Heritage and museum archiving — a complete digital record of an artefact, patina and finish included.
  • Art reproduction and sculpture — surface texture and painted detail captured for study or replication.
  • Product visualisation — photorealistic models of real products for catalogues, packaging and presentations.
  • Dental work — shade and texture captured alongside the geometry.
  • Education and research — digitised specimens and teaching models that still look like the real thing.
  • CGI and game assets — real-world objects converted into textured models ready for rendering.

If your goal is purely engineering — reverse engineering to CAD, dimensional inspection, or a functional 3D print — geometry alone is usually enough and your project does not need a colour pass. We will tell you honestly which one you need.

Colour 3D scanners we supply

The Shining 3D EinScan Libre handheld colour 3D scanner, used for capturing colour and texture
The Shining 3D EinScan Libre — one of the colour-capable handheld scanners we supply, self-contained and wireless.
  • Shining 3D EinScan Libre — the current all-in-one handheld colour scanner: wireless, marker-free laser scanning with full-colour texture capture, and the scan processed on the device itself.
  • Shining 3D EinScan Rigil — a tri-mode wireless scanner (hybrid laser and infrared) with a 5 MP camera for full-colour texture, so the model keeps the surface appearance as well as the shape.

Both sit in our multi-functional 3D scanner range, and both are supported locally — we supply, calibrate and service the equipment we sell. Scanning small parts on a bench? Ask us which desktop system suits that job.

Colour scanning as a service

You do not need to own a colour scanner to get a colour model. Send us the object and we will capture it for you, the same way we run the rest of our 3D scanning service. You receive a textured mesh — OBJ or PLY — together with your object back, ready for rendering, presentation or archiving. See what you receive for how the formats are used.

Which scanner for colour work

Colour fidelity is not a single feature — it is a requirement that points at different machines depending on what the colour is for.

What you need Machine Why it fits
Maximum colour and texture fidelity — heritage, art, artefacts, product visuals EinScan Libre 48 MP colour camera, wireless and standalone with on-device processing; captures objects from 0.1 m to over 10 m at up to 0.05 mm point distance
Colour and engineering-grade geometry in one machine EinScan Rigil Tri-mode professional handheld with a 5 MP texture camera, 19 + 19 crossed blue laser lines and IR VCSEL; volumetric accuracy up to 0.04 + 0.06 mm/m
People, prosthetics, dental and organic shapes EinScan H2 / EinScan Medixa H2 pairs a 5 MP texture camera with white-light and invisible IR modes for subjects that move; the Medixa is the clinical all-in-one with patient presets
Colour for one job, not a purchase Our colour scanning service Send the object by courier or drop it at the showroom — you get the textured model back without buying a scanner

Frequently asked questions

Does colour 3D scanning make the scan less accurate?

No. Colour capture is a camera on the same scanner — it maps texture onto the geometry rather than changing how the surface is measured. A colour-capable machine still quotes its own dimensional specification: the EinScan Libre, for example, is specified at volumetric accuracy up to 0.04 + 0.06 mm/m with a 0.05 mm point distance in Laser HD mode.

Which surfaces are difficult to capture in colour?

Shiny, transparent and very dark surfaces are the hard cases — light reflects off them instead of scattering, so texture can drop out. On heritage and art work the usual answer is a light matte spray on a test area, but we always scan a sample first and show you the result rather than promising it in advance.

Can one scan give me both the colour model and the CAD geometry?

Usually yes, when the machine supports both. The same capture carries geometry and texture, so we can deliver a textured mesh for visual use and a clean mesh or CAD-ready surface for engineering from the one session.

What file formats carry the colour and texture?

Mesh formats that support texture maps: OBJ, PLY and 3MF are the usual ones, and the scanners we supply export OBJ, STL, ASC, PLY, P3 and 3MF depending on the model. Tell us which software the next step happens in and we will match the export to it.

What does colour 3D scanning cost in Malaysia?

It depends whether you are buying a scanner or commissioning a one-off scan. A machine is quoted per configuration — scanner, software and calibration; a service job is quoted on the object, the size and the output you need. Send us the object or a photo and we will quote either route.

Not sure whether your job needs colour at all? The scanner range sets out the three tiers, and the buyer’s guide works through part size, surfaces and tolerance. We can also demonstrate both on your own object.
