A scan quote tracks four things — the size of the part, how awkward its surface is, the accuracy you need and the deliverable you want back. If you have been comparing 3D scanning services in Malaysia, you have probably noticed that almost nobody publishes a price list — and the figures you do find online rarely survive contact with a real job. There is a reason for that: scanning is quoted per part, because the cost depends on what the part is and what you need back from it. Trinventor Solution quotes every job before any work starts, so you know the number up front.

Why 3D scanning is quoted per job

A short scan of a simple bracket and a two-day project on a full vehicle are both “3D scanning”, but they share almost nothing in effort, equipment or processing time. A single published rate would either be wrong for complex work or misleading for simple work. Quoting per job is what lets a straightforward part stay affordable while a demanding project gets the time it genuinely needs.

What drives the cost of a scan

Large, awkward parts are scanned where they sit — size and access are two of the biggest cost drivers in a quote.

Seven factors influence almost every quote. Describe these when you contact us and the quote can be accurate from the start.

Cost driver Why it matters
Object size and volume Scanning time scales with surface area — a car body takes far longer than a hand tool.
Geometry and complexity Deep pockets, internal features, thin walls and freeform curves need extra coverage passes.
Surface finish Shiny, black, transparent or highly reflective parts need preparation before a scan is reliable.
Accuracy requirement Data for 3D printing or visualisation is a lighter job than metrology-grade data for inspection.
Deliverable A raw mesh is the fastest output. Cleaned meshes, CAD-ready surfaces and inspection reports carry additional processing.
Quantity and repeats The first part of a batch includes setup; repeated scans of the same type of part are quicker.
Colour capture Full-colour texture is a separate capture pass on top of the geometry.

What every quote includes

The scan builds live on screen; what you receive is the cleaned, processed version of that data.
  • The scan itself — captured on metrology-grade Shining 3D equipment matched to your part’s size and finish.
  • Processing — cleaning, alignment and meshing, so you receive usable data rather than a raw point cloud.
  • The formats you need — mesh (STL, OBJ, PLY) or CAD-ready surfaces (STEP, IGES), as agreed before we start.
  • Your part returned — sent back to you together with the files.

The figure we quote is the figure you pay. If a job turns out to need something we did not anticipate, we come back to you before doing the extra work, not after.

How to keep a scanning project economical

  • Send photos first. A few clear photos of the part, with something in frame for scale, usually let us confirm feasibility and estimate the job before you ship anything.
  • Tell us the end use. “I want to 3D print it”, “I want it in CAD” and “I need to inspect a batch against this” are three different jobs. Stating the goal stops us processing data you do not need.
  • Group parts into one shipment. Multiple parts in a single job share the setup and shipping effort.
  • Reuse existing drawings or CAD. For inspection work especially, having the reference CAD model turns scanning into a straight comparison.

Service or machine? When buying makes sense

If your scanning need is a one-off — a legacy part to be reproduced, a mould to be checked, an artefact to be archived — the service is almost always the sensible route.
