How to Start a Custom Tumbler Business in Malaysia

Four laser-engraved stainless steel tumblers in copper, silver, blue and black with custom quote designs, ready to ship

Quick verdict: Tumblers sell every day of the year in Malaysia, and the margin is in the engraving. The one thing that decides whether it works is the machine: only a fiber laser marks bare stainless steel.

A custom tumbler business is one of the most reliable ways into personalised products, for a simple reason: tumblers are the default gift in Malaysia. Corporate events, weddings, team-building, graduations — someone, somewhere, is ordering engraved tumblers every day of the year.

Here’s how to start one that actually makes money.

Why tumblers (and not something else)

  • Constant demand — corporate gifting doesn’t slow down.
  • High margin — the blank is cheap; the engraving is the value.
  • Fast — a logo or name engraves in seconds to a couple of minutes.
  • Durable — laser engraving doesn’t peel like vinyl wraps.

The machine (this is the whole ballgame)

A plain stainless steel tumbler cannot be engraved by a CO2 or diode laser — those wavelengths don’t mark bare metal. You need a fiber laser.

CO2 No
Diode No
Fiber / MOPA Yes — permanent, high contrast

The xTool F2 Ultra is the machine for this:

  • MOPA fiber laser — marks stainless permanently, and adds colour marking as a premium upsell.
  • Rotary attachment (optional accessory, sold separately) — engraves the full circumference of the tumbler, not just one face.
  • Conveyor option — batch multiple tumblers for bulk corporate orders.
  • Dual cameras — logos land exactly where you want them.

Where to source blanks

Plain stainless tumblers and flasks are cheap and widely available from local and online wholesalers. Buy a small range of sizes (350ml, 500ml, 750ml, 1L) and a few finishes (brushed, matte, black-coated). Test-engrave every blank before you commit to it — coating thickness and finish affect the mark.

Match the blank to the mark you want

Tumbler blanks are not interchangeable. Bare stainless takes a dark, annealed mark that stands out sharply against the metal. Brushed stainless hides fine scratches and gives a softer result. Powder-coated, painted and plated tumblers behave differently again: the laser removes the coating rather than reacting with the steel, so the mark comes out light or frosted against the colour underneath.

Coating thickness changes from one supplier to the next, so test-engrave every new delivery before you quote on it, and keep a sample of each finish on your bench. Marking is non-contact, so no clamp ever presses on a finished or coated tumbler.

Colour marking as a premium option

A MOPA fiber laser does more than a plain dark mark. By controlling how the surface of stainless steel or titanium oxidises, the same beam produces black, white and colour marks with no ink or film involved.

It is the easiest upgrade to sell because it is visible, and it suits pieces where the design carries the value: anniversary flasks, wedding sets, awards and premium corporate gifts. Offer it as its own line in your quote.

How to price engraved tumblers

Price on the personalisation, not the product:

  • Single unit — product cost + a premium for the engraving + your time.
  • Bulk corporate order — a per-unit rate that drops with volume, but never below your floor.
  • Colour marking — a justified upsell over plain engraving.

A good rule: your engraving fee should be worth more than the blank. That’s where the profit lives.

Running a bulk or corporate order

Bulk work is a process problem, not a laser problem. Four steps decide whether a large run leaves your workshop cleanly:

  • Artwork and approval — ask for the logo as vector artwork (SVG, PDF, AI or EPS), agree the size and placement, then have the customer approve one engraved sample before you run the rest.
  • Consistency — record the placement, depth and settings for that blank and repeat them on every unit. One tumbler a few millimetres out of line turns a set into a complaint.
  • Throughput — the conveyor accessory extends the work area to 220 x 500 mm, so tumblers follow one another through the machine instead of being set by hand each time.
  • Packaging — confirm the deadline in writing, pack each tumbler individually, and send an early sample set if an event date is fixed.

Quote the turnaround you can hold after your test pieces, not the one you hope for.

How to get orders

  1. Corporate HR and marketing teams — one order of 200–500 tumblers is a real business. Pitch directly.
  2. Event planners and wedding vendors — favours are recurring.
  3. Marketplaces — Shopee and TikTok Shop for individual buyers; “made to order” means no dead stock.
  4. Show samples — a tray of engraved tumblers at a corporate pitch closes more deals than any brochure.
