The honest answer to “how much does it cost to start an engraving business” is: less than most people think, but the machine is only one part of it. The people who fail don’t fail because of the machine — they fail because they budgeted for the machine and forgot everything else.

This breaks down the real costs, so you can start with your eyes open.

The machine (one-time, quoted)

This is the headline cost, and it varies by what you engrave:

Match the machine to the product you want to sell

A sturdy table, clear space around the machine and lockable storage matter more than a large room.

Pricing your own work as a home seller

Build the price rather than guessing it. Add the blank you used, the machine time the job actually takes, and the consumables it consumed — small on a laser, larger if you outsource design or packaging. Then add your own time for design, setup, packing and messages. Apply your margin last, and compare the result against what comparable Malaysian listings charge. Recheck the method whenever blank costs move.

Getting your first customers — and knowing when it is a business

Start where buyers already search: Shopee, TikTok Shop and Lazada listings with clear photos and personalisation options, plus local Facebook groups for seasonal and corporate gifting.
